Paintings have a strange way of talking to each other long after the brushstrokes dry. For weeks, three lemons sat quietly in my studio, almost whispering, “What’s next?”
If you followed my recent work like When Light Shines, you know I often lean into rich textures and intricate patterning. But art, like life, is an extension of our current experiences. Lately, I have been moving through a more tender, introspective season of personal change and loss. In the studio, that emotional shift naturally pulled me toward absolute simplicity.
With Lemon Zest, I decided to strip away the background patterns entirely. I wanted to focus on the raw, honest beauty of geometry—allowing simple shapes to sit on the canvas and simply be “enough.”
To me, lemons always capture the vibrant brightness of summer. Yet, they carry that familiar tart, bittersweet taste. They serve as a gentle reminder that life holds immense beauty alongside its challenges. While I am still navigating the quieter parts of this season, capturing the sunshine of these simple forms brought a grounding peace to my easel.
