Late Light Along the Fields 10″ x 8″ Oil on canvas – $475
There are times when I deeply miss painting the outdoors, which is exactly how this piece came to life. While sorting through old photographs, I came across a snapshot of the beautiful field directly behind my house here in town. Experiencing an autumn landscape draws me in. There is warmth in the breathtaking, transitional colors of autumn—it is truly my absolute favorite time of year. Those golden yellows, burnt oranges, and deep magentas never fail to inspire me.
In the studio, I wanted to capture that electric energy of the golden hour using a stylized, Post-Impressionist approach. I played up the rich textures in the foreground grasses with rhythmic brushstrokes, using deep violet shadows to balance the sun-drenched orange of the trees.
One of my favorite things about painting is letting imagination take over. While the actual view behind my house is entirely open field, the background in this piece naturally evolved to look like a quiet body of water. I loved that shift and decided to keep it, letting a bit of imaginative inspiration guide the final landscape.
With its bold outlines, high-chroma palette, and a signature pop of red peeking through the layers, this piece brings a warm, modern vibrance to a traditional scene. It was a joy to step outside my usual subjects for this one, and I hope it brings that same feeling of a luminous autumn evening into your space.
