“The Flower Show”

“The Flower Show” 20″ x 16″ Oil on canvas – $1200

Painting from photographs isn’t my favorite way to work, although at times it’s what I choose to do in order to capture an experience that’s memorable to me. This is one of those situations.

In March I had so much fun attending the Philadelphia Flower Show with a long time friend. I hadn’t been to this show in about 20 years. (oh how time flies…) The theme for this years show was “United by Flowers”. Don’t you just love that? For me it says so much and is certainly something I relate to as a painter and someone who enjoys painting still life’s.

It goes without saying that the the Pennsylvania Convention Center was transformed into this magical space filled with electric color, gorgeous displays of flowers, trees and all kinds of amazing plants. Each display had a distinctive theme and I found myself wondering how the artists, designers, florists etc. pulled these spaces together and kept them so fresh and alive for the duration of the event. Some of the displays were meant to be embraced from a distance and others invited you in and allowed you to become part of the experience. They were visual, textural and fragrant!

What appealed to me in this display was the creative incorporation of color mixed with more muted pale pieces of furniture. There was an air of tradition in the furnishings that off set the explosive, robust arrangements of flowers and scintillating use of color. The gold upholstered chair was an exception and set separate from the dining room table in the distance but infused with a consistent palette of electric hues. I loved the old trunk and suitcase as accessories and notations of time. It was such a lovely journey to interpret this on canvas.

This painting was created on a gallery wrapped canvas in oils and is a signed original. If you have any questions or wish to purchase this painting, contact me at cmartzloffart@gmail.com. * Note the frame is for suggestion only.
