Some interesting vistas can be found from the vantage point of a backyard. And I seem to make mental notes of such places as a matter of habit, sort of collecting a diary of potential paintings.
This architectural arrangement is one that had caught my eye numerous times while walking my dog. It definitely became part of my diary. I think the light and contrasting shadows are what inspired me on this sunny fall morning to set up and paint.
As I got settled, I was engaged by the beautiful shapes and angles that created an intimate yet colorful story. Although there was a lot of detail and texture within the area an underlying simplicity existed in the straight forward forms. I liked the idea of keeping it simple in this piece. Besides the fact that there’s rarely a lot of time to linger on something while plein air painting. The light just changes so quickly.
