Approaching painting this still life was a bit scary. I incorporated a lot of different shapes and colors into the arrangement and I wasn’t so sure how it might all play out in a painting. Most of the inspiration came from the colors in the scarf draped over a dark red pillow in the background and a bunch of fresh fruit I had in my fridge. My intention was to create something bright, beautiful and unique that invokes a feeling of wonder. The use of many primary colors brings a child like novelty to the painting as do the simple shapes.
Painting seems to call for and openness to experiment/challenge. There can be value in feeling uncertain and vulnerable with a composition and facing creating something meaningful. This wasn’t easy, but I am happy with the outcome.
My fellow artist and friend was working in watercolors from a different vantage point of the same set up, and her interpretation also came out amazing with an entirely different feel. I love the softness and looseness of her approach.
I’d love to hear your experience with these 2 paintings. I’ve included a link to Julie’s Instagram page for more of her paintings.
It’s always interesting to be a part of witnessing other artists painting the same subject. The outcomes bear resemblance but are unique and diverse even though they are connected in the subject matter.
This painting was created on a gallery wrapped canvas in oils and is a signed original. It is currently available for purchase. Contact me at cmartzloffart@gmail.com for more information. * Note the frame is for suggestion only. Thank you! Catherine

This is absolutely terrific, I just love all of the energy, depth, and how the apple and orange just pop – and also tie it all together (in my eye). Really great!
