I’ve been painting alongside a fellow artist in my studio. Each session brings new energy, as we exchange ideas and objects to shape the arrangements. This particular still life came from her contribution. She added two striking artichokes. There was also a floral-patterned plate. These elements immediately shifted the tone. They gave the setup a refreshing spirit.
I hadn’t painted artichokes in years and, truthfully, felt a little nervous at first. But as I worked, I was reminded of their character. The artichokes have triangular leaves, textured surfaces, and that bold, earthy green. They’re subjects with real substance. The patterned plate was originally black with yellow, pink, and green designs. It inspired me to replace the black with a deep reddish-purple. This change added warmth and richness. Behind it all, a floral motif emerged from fabric I’d pinned to the wall, lending another layer of playfulness.
When I titled the piece, I returned to the artichokes’ Mediterranean roots. It seemed fitting. This painting was not just a still life. It was also a feast of color, texture, and history. It celebrated treasures from another part of the world.

Love how you painted this, Cathy!! Love those deep olive greens, or in this case, artichoke greens. I’m about to jump into my dry pastels and so I spent a lot of time looking how simply you made depth and 3D affect with different shades of color and contrast. Thank you for sharing this!!
