Getting ready for a plein-air event back in Bordentown, New Jersey in September. This is part of an annual house tour fundraiser. For the next few weeks I will be making some visits to paint some of the designated locations to submit as part of the event.
This colorful rendering was captured a few weeks ago on a beautiful morning. There was a light breeze and little humidity! (Whew…) The featured building is the Clara Barton One Room School House. It was in the late 1800’s that Clara visited Bordentown and learned that there were laws in New Jersey regarding free education that were not being implemented. After meeting with the Chairman of the school committee she was given a run down one room school house and had 6 students show up the first day. Read more here!
I was drawn to the charming nature of the location and amplified the colors and patterns within the landscape. It’s a whimsical painting with a lot of hope infused through color. I suspect that may be how Clara felt as she opened a door to free public education.
I look forward to enjoying the history a bit more as I head off to paint there next week. Enjoy!
