This painting, Vibrant Red Azaela’s reminds me of summer. While the azaelas here in New Jersey are visible in spring, the energy of their presence lingers and was inspiration for this expressive still life painting.
Layering the transparency of glass with a dynamic palette of colors and interesting patterns was anchored in a theme of connectedness. Thoughts of transitioning from spring into summer and the power of flowers and plants that ground us.
The red azaela on the side of my house gives a nod to the red azaelas my parents had growing along side my childhood home. I could count on those red blooms, just like I can now. Placing them in a painting honors their delicate beauty while providing a more lasting memory of an experience, and my ability to add to that memory using my creativity. I didn’t need to capture the entire plant – only a clipping for it to have meaning.

I didn’t realize that you live in New Jersey. I visited the Woodbury area and then went to the shore and visited several quaint places and had salt water taffy (of course) and took many photos. This was 7 or 8 years ago. Lovely area! Happy July 4!
Hi Louise, thanks for sharing that with me. It’s fun to hear when someone is familiar or has an experience near where you live. I’m not familiar with Woodbury. I’ll have to look it up. I haven’t had salt water taffy in years. It is good! Sounds like you had fun. Happy 4th to you too!
