“Dragon Fruit and Grapes”

“Dragon Fruit and Grapes - 9″x 12” – Oil on canvas – $400

Exotic fruits aren’t something I normally buy, but I’ve come across Dragon Fruit a few times in my trips to the market. This last visit one of the displays was full of them and I couldn’t resist taking a closer look! I wasn’t quiet sure what they would feel like and was very curious about the inside. What would the texture and flavor be like? Only one way to find out – buy one.

As curious as I was to cut it open, I really wanted to sort out how to incorporate this fruit into a still life arrangement. As I said I loved the vibrant color so with that as the lead I chose some items for their color compatibility with the Dragon Fruit. The blue glass cheese dome and purple/pink charcuterie board seemed to work along with a bunch of green grapes.

I think the painting reminds me of spring and a pastel bouquet of flowers or scoops of sherbet ice cream in different flavors. After the painting was well on it’s way I did cut open the Dragon Fruit and was surprised by the inside which looked a bit like a Kiwi fruit but more light grey with little dark flecks in it. I can’t say this one was too tasty. Maybe it was out of season, but I sure did enjoy having it as a subject to paint and hope to bring these into a still life down the road again.

Enjoy

This painting was created on a stretched canvas in oils and is a signed original. If you have any questions or wish to purchase this painting, contact me at cmartzloffart@gmail.com.

  1. I used to eat dragon fruit constantly but then it seemed I was over them. However you using them in your painting is amazing! I agree this arrangement resembles spring colors which puts a huge smile on my face. Thank you for sharing this, Catherine. ❤️
