“On Park and Farnsworth”

“On Park and Farnsworth” 9″ x 12″ Oil on canvas – $400

Another trip down history lane in Bordentown, NJ. There are many magnificent historic homes and buildings in Bordentown. That’s one of the things I like about painting here. In this painting I chose to capture the rear entrance to a gorgeous home on the corner of Park Street and Farnsworth Avenue. It’s a light cream colored stucco with colonial blue shutters and gorgeous ironwork. I loved the ambiance of the home but was drawn to the small cozy entryway in the back with the car in the driveway.

The house is now the home of a local family, but was known as the Joseph Borden House – owned by Colonel Joseph Borden back in the day. When I spoke to the owner, who I met while painting, he told me a bit about its history and some of the things he and his wife had done since they moved in. I also did some research and came upon the following excerpt in an old publication that was used for self-guided tours around town.

“The present structure was built on the ruins of the original homestead which was burned in 1775 by the British as a retaliatory measure. The house features heavy Georgian details in the treatment of the doorway, window lintels and roof cornice. It is very symmetrical. The most notable feature on the property is the ironwork “wheat sheaves” fence, one of the finest examples in the state. The side porch has cast iron columns.”

Here is the photo of the view I painted on location. The sun was delightful as were the cast shadows but I really focused on the garage and side entry. I understand the interior is even more magnificent. Maybe they will have this on a house tour sometime!

This painting was created on a gallery wrapped canvas in oils and is a signed original. If you have any questions or wish to purchase this painting, contact me at cmartzloffart@gmail.com.

  1. What an absolute delight this is, Catherine. I appreciate your paintings now more due to what I’ve been doing. You have a really good eye and are able to do what is not my style ….. rendering a picture as is. My hand has a tendency to fly at will doing its own thing or my imagination begins and what I planned on painting never happens. The process always amazes me as I’m sure it does you. To watch something manifest from a blank canvas is deeply satisfying, isn’t it? Thank you for sharing your heart. You make the world a far better place just by being here. xo
