A Palette of Shapes and Colors – 16″ x 20″ Oil on canvas $1450
Working with the same subject across more than one painting was outside my usual rhythm. At one time I might have assumed it would feel repetitive, but the experience revealed more than I expected. Spending longer with the arrangement deepened my understanding of both the subject and the space it occupied, and it also showed me a bit more about myself as an artist.
As the process unfolded, natural changes occurred. Some of the fruit decayed and had to be discarded, and instead of restoring the arrangement to its original state, I allowed it to evolve with fewer elements. My position in the studio shifted as well, offering a different point of view to explore. Pattern and fabric became a quiet area of curiosity too.
This painting carried more pattern than The Celebration Pitcher, where the lighter background fabric remained mostly tonal and pattern was reserved for the magenta cloth. The color palette stayed fairly consistent between the two works, and the subtle tropical or native influence that surfaced in the first painting continued here as a point of exploration.
What remains most interesting is how two paintings built from nearly the same objects can still develop entirely distinct personalities. Even with shared elements, each work finds its own voice.
