Vessels within the Quadrangle
In this painting, I leaned into the relationship between containment and openness. The vessels—a terracotta pot, a faceted bottle, a glowing red vase—become characters within a geometry of shifting planes and light. Their presence is both grounded and playful, set against a backdrop where color fields push and pull in conversation.
I love how these objects, simple on their own, transform when placed together. The forms begin to overlap, echo, and respond to one another, creating a layered rhythm. The squared edges of the background contrast with the curving profiles of the vessels, suggesting both structure and fluidity.
For me, this piece is about more than just objects. It’s about how color, form, and placement can turn the ordinary into something alive with energy. The vessels stand within their “quadrangle.” The space feels dynamic rather than confined. It invites the eye to wander and rest in equal measure.
I’d love to know what this painting stirs for you—do you see stillness, movement, or something in between? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Beautiful painting Catherine. The purple and red glass vases are particularly eye catching! Well done!
Thank you Louise. I really appreciate your feedback and experience with the piece. The journey in painting this was filled with unexpected experiences. Sometimes that makes is scary to start the painting because I don’t usually have a specific outcome in mind – other than to interpret in the moment what I’m seeing. Maybe you can relate. Catherine
I see presence and being. I love this piece!
Thank you Sarah. That means a lot to hear. Catherine
