“Vintage Apothecary” Painting: Explore the Beauty of Glass

“Vintage Apothecary” 8″ x 10″ Oil on canvas – SOLD

“Vintage Apothecary” is my latest still life and is reflective of my continuing to work with the beauty of glass and bottles in particular. I’ve loved glass most of my life and have been fascinated with glassblowing for decades. Although this painting isn’t representative of hand blown glass there are a couple of vintage apothecary bottles in the painting.

I think if I had known glass-blowing was a trade I could learn as part of pursuing my art, I might have gone that route. Although I recognized other people did this, it didn’t dawn on me as something I actually do. One of my first experiences witnessing glass blowing was at a living history museum. I remember being enthralled with the liquid nature of glass at high temperatures. I was fascinated by how it was shaped by the breath.

Glass has been used as an art form throughout history. It’s appeal is diverse. I’ve been told over recent years that my painting style can resemble aspects of stained glass, which I do understand.

Overall, I hoped to bring a sense of the romantic and historical into this painting. I also wanted to infuse a strong, contemporary sense of color and design.

Please feel free to comment on the piece and how you experience it. Thank you, Catherine
