Some vibrant, fun color was in order for this still life oil painting and I had the props to inspire such an outcome. Some fruit, a wine bottle and terracotta pot – nothing fancy or out of the ordinary – that’s to me now is the miss conception.
The simplicity of these shapes reminded me of some early drawing and painting classes that helped me learn to see and uncover the beauty of form with pencils, charcoal and then paint. I could spend hours getting lost in capturing a sense of roundness in an orange or pear. Tirelessly shifting the values, erasing and making new marks to perfect what I was experiencing with my eyes onto the paper. The hope always centered around someone else relating to my feeling wonder in this creative exploration that was becoming more meaningful the more I was engaged with it.
While I love basics and have a respect for tradition, I also like to mix things up and add the unexpected. This is what excites me in painting as much as witnessing the wonder in the arcs of a shadow or terracotta pot. Choosing to incorporate a rich palette of colors and unusual backgrounds that contribute a sense of patterning has meaning for me. It’s a method to step into an adventure with an unknown outcome. What I can count on is learning something new, sometimes it flows and other times not so much. The trick is to just keep going and see what comes…
