My journey as an artist always includes working with what is around me and what I have easy access to. In recent years, the still life has become central to my body of work. It’s in working with common objects that I am challenged to get quiet, look a little deeper into my own imagination and write a story with paint that is a bit different and a lot more celebratory of the common, everyday objects around me.
“A Stationary Moment” brings to mind the idea that seated in time moments present themselves, sometimes spontaneously and sometimes planned. Either way the opportunity exists to be fully present and aware of ones contribution to the “picture”.
In developing this composition there was a combination of inspiration and planning. My friend suggested working with a chair and I liked the idea. This chair is of vintage nature with a cained seat that needed repair. Rather than incorporating this aspect of the chair into the painting, my friend suggested adding a plate full of fruit. I liked the unexpected nature of a plate of fruit on the seat. I had a moment of wondering why would a plate of fruit be here? I suppose that’s a launch pad for the creation of a story! Other than that I welcomed not having to tackle the caining pattern or a chair needing repair.
The warm inviting color, playful floral motifs, sturdy vertical lines and subjects presented as things without any special significance. The cool blue shadows mixed with hints of mustard yellow and white on the floor were intriguing. I started to imagine them as a rug supporting everything. Perhaps painting the broken seat would have been an interesting excercise too.
I ended up identifying with the chair in some way and the beauty of shadows becoming something different. Being reminded so gently that many parts of my life are in states of transition, repair and imperfection. Such is the magic of creativity! It has a way of engaging the human spirit in ways we may never imagine until we arrive and enter the experience.
Enjoy
