“Summer”

“Summer” 12″ x 9″ Oil on canvas – $400

Summer can be described in so many ways without words. It’s a season that brings light, color and more time outdoors. While I love the longer days and beautiful sunlight and being able to paint outside – I’m not such a fan of the humidity. One of the things l do enjoy about working in my studio (which is in my basement) is that it’s cooler.

In this oil painting the feeling of summer became evident through the bright saturated colors. The flowers were also quite brilliant and reflective of what was active in my garden at the time. Vibrant oranges and pinks looked even more special with the greenery of the leaves around them. Nature has such a brilliant way of orchestrating things! When I brought the flowers down to my studio and put them on the table I spent a little time considering the background and what I saw. The wall is white and I add lighting. In this case I picked up on a warm orangey yellow influence that felt like the sun. I saw soft violet hues in the cast shadows and decided to exaggerate all of it hoping it would exude the essence of “summer”.

It’s meaningful to me to be able to record such moments without the need for words and to tune in to how a still life arrangement is impacting me on the inside. Asking myself what am I feeling about this arrangement and letting that guide the physical painting process is a big part of how I work.

Enjoy!
