Light Between Seasons – 10″ x 8″ Oil on canvas – $300
Light Between Seasons began with bottles—a subject I’ve explored several times this season, yet each painting offers its own surprises. I feel drawn to the mystery and sense of excitement in having glass objects as part of an arrangement. Glass is endlessly fascinating. It captures light differently every time. When paired with patterned fabric, the challenge and delight multiply. I feel like I stepped into something too challenging. Yet, I trust the painting process I have developed over the years.
In this piece, I incorporated some new leaf-patterned fabrics that brought a layer of freshness. Adjusting them slightly as I worked to harmonize with what was happening in the context of the bottles. I let the painting evolve organically.
I love the balance of familiarity and discovery in repeating a subject. While I know these forms intimately, the light, reflections, and interplay with pattern keep the painting moving and alive. Up close, the brushstrokes are simple marks, swabs of color; step back, and they become shapes, textures, and light. This tension between suggestion and literal representation is at the heart of my work.
In Light Between Seasons, I hope viewers can linger and notice the subtleties. Finding a quiet moment of recognition in the way light and pattern meet.
If this piece speaks to you in any way, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Or, if you see something in it that resonates, please share your reflections. Catherine
