Trimmed from my Rose of Sharon tree this gathering of flowers reminds me of my Dad. After first buying the house he and his wife brought a sapling from their yard as a gift. I didn’t know much about these plants then. I certainly didn’t know their name. Over the years, I see they are quite hardy and popular in my area.
When contemplating this still life the idea of working with Rose of Sharon felt appealing. The one I have has a beautiful palette of blue, soft violet and purple flowers. It’s a soothing offering in terms of a palette. Of course my dad crossed my mind – he passed recently and so did his wife. This experience may have been part of what led me to create the painting.
The turquoise canning jar is a vintage piece that shows up a lot in my work. Sometimes having something familiar to fall back on or incorporate feels nurturing to my soul. The aura of flowers, in general, are soothing and uplifting. They always feel reliable and comforting. They offer love and joy in a way my Dad couldn’t. They remind me of what’s beautiful in today and in life.
Inspiration for my next collection has to do with the powerful aura of flowers. It’s becoming a collection of treasures I can always fall back on. Whether the subject is in bloom or not. I need that consistency of support.
