This still life has always held a certain energy for me—bright, bold, and quietly grounded. Formerly titled Vibrant Winter Clementines and Greenery, the painting now takes on a new name: The Shape of Stillness. The name reflects not a change in appearance. Instead, it represents a shift in how I see and feel the piece. This shift occurs within the larger context of my Aura of Flowers collection.
While not floral in the traditional sense, the painting leans into the supportive role that greenery often plays. Greenery acts as a backdrop or frame. It quietly holds the more showy blooms in place. The leaves in this piece spill from a canning jar with movement. They possess vitality and echo the gestures and energy found in many of the floral arrangements throughout this series. The bowl of clementines is rich in orange hues. It offers a vibrant pulse. This vibrancy nods to the zinnias and sun-soaked petals appearing elsewhere in the collection.
This painting reminds me that stillness doesn’t mean lifelessness. There’s motion here—in the curve of a leaf. It’s in the way color vibrates. It’s in the layered conversation between shape and space. It’s in that tension, and in that harmony, that stillness truly takes form.
