Nature’s Still Life: Mushrooms and Pears Painting

The Humble Mushroom and Quiet Pear 10″ x 8″ Oil on canvas – $300

I’ve been drawn to mushrooms as a subject lately, and this painting is part of a small series exploring their quiet charm. It all started when a fellow artist friend brought some mushrooms to a painting session a few weeks ago. I had almost forgotten how fascinating they are—such simple forms, yet full of character. Their curved shapes, soft whites, and subtle shadows make them a joy to paint.

At the same time, I’ve been watching ALONE, a show that follows survivalists as they navigate the wild landscapes of places like Vancouver Island and Patagonia. Mushrooms appear time and again in their foraging efforts—some as vital nourishment, others as dangerous imposters. It’s reminded me of their deep connection to the earth, growing unseen in the soil until they emerge in their many varied forms. Not all are edible, but all have a certain beauty, a quiet presence that feels grounding.

In this painting, The Humble Mushroom and Quiet Pear, I wanted to bring that organic simplicity into a still life composition. The background patterning plays a role in creating a sense of home, warmth, and familiarity, yet I altered the fabric’s original colors and softened its representation. The motifs are more silhouette-like, allowing the focus to remain on the mushrooms’ distinct forms. Color choices also became an important part of the process—I was led toward a warmer palette, but I wanted to keep an element of surprising contrast, balancing earthy tones with pops of vibrancy.

This is the second in my mushroom series, and I’m excited to share more soon! Have you ever been drawn to something in nature as a subject for contemplation and realized its been in front of you all along?
