Lemon and Lavender 20″ x 16″ – Oil on canvas – $1200
Initially, I began arranging objects for this still life with a clear intention. I wanted to explore the depth and variety of greens. I spent time adjusting elements, taking many photographs, and considering subtle shifts in composition. I knew I was not ready to start painting it right away. Thus, I worked from these captured moments rather than recreating the setup in real time.
As the painting took shape, I realized that something unexpected had emerged. The variations of green were present. A dynamic interplay of contrasts began to unfold—light against dark, warm against cool, vintage against new. The title Lemon and Lavender came up in conversation, and it immediately resonated with me. I’m not entirely sure why. I was drawn to the contrasts in name and color. They brought balance to the greens. This enhanced the overall harmony.
This painting feels like a collage, a patchwork of moments and influences, woven together through layers of color and contrast. It reminds me that sometimes, even with a clear intention, the process leads us somewhere unexpected. This is where the real magic happens.
Here are a few iterations as I was selecting and moving things around developing the still life. The exploration included changes in perspective– close up, view over the top, etc.
