The Pantry Table: A New Story in Still Life
This painting, The Pantry Table, brings together a thoughtful selection of objects, creating a scene that feels both familiar and timeless. At the center of the composition is a willow basket from my personal collection. Its unique low profile and textured weave caught my eye, inspiring me to feature it prominently. It’s the kind of basket that seems to hold stories within its woven strands—that’s why I love it! It’s also an everyday object that bridges function and beauty, now lending its presence to this still life.
The grey pitcher and fluted bottle were borrowed treasures, their forms and muted tones adding subtle elegance and balance to the arrangement. The floral fabric swatch beneath the basket is my own, a small but meaningful touch that ties the composition together and reminds me of a comforting place at home. Above it all, the dried flowers offer a quiet nod to seasonality, bringing a touch of softness and nostalgia to the scene.
In creating The Pantry Table, I also found myself inspired by the interplay of light and shadow in my studio. The lines in the background reference the paneling there, while the abstract shadow shapes suggest something intangible—a reflection of how past and present often converge in my work.
At its core, this painting is more than a simple arrangement of objects. It’s about how these disparate parts, each with their own quiet story, come together to create a unified whole. There is an ongoing theme in my work of giving space to the overlooked or shadowed parts of the soul—elements that might not be fully understood but can be felt. In The Pantry Table, these objects find new life together, each contributing to a shared moment of harmony and balance.
This piece feels like an invitation to pause, reflect, and consider how the small and familiar pieces of our lives can come together to create something meaningful.
