A magical forest can mean something different for everyone. I remember reading about magical forests in some fairytales. Today as an adult and decades later, a walk in the woods can still have an extraordinary impact on my state of being.
The afternoon that inspired this painting was early spring. I was taking a walk and brought my camera incase I came across something I felt moved by. It was at the end of the walk that I stopped to look back noticing this vista. The sun was starting to shift and the golden glow emerging from within this forest was breathtaking. Vibrant yellows of all kinds stood out so strong from the heart of the woods. I was taken by the contrast of the vertical timbers in the background and the pass of spring green along the horizon. I’m not sure how long I stood there observing and absorbing the moment. I didn’t want to leave but wanted to savor all the sensations being offered.

When it comes to painting, this is exactly what I hope to bring into the paintings as I paint them. The palette of colors in this painting are of a warm, nurturing earthy variety. The warm yellows and ochres are grounding while delightfully highlighted by accenting shades of violet, cerulean blue and a plethora of green. I don’t like to work with black so mixing the 3 primaries to come up with something just about as dark is the path I take.
This painting itself is 4.5″ x 6.75″ and comes directly from my sketchbook. It was painted on 100 lb. bristol paper. There is a small border around the artwork like you see here. It can be matted and framed. The price includes shipping.
