The impact of color, in my view, is endless it’s something that has a broad and rippling impact on my spirit, my environment and even my body. In this still life the inspiration was simply to create a small painting and although I love working with vibrant color I did not have a specific plan of how this would unfold. What I did know going into the painting was that I need to stay engaged with the practice of painting for it’s nurturing qualities to continue to grow in me.
If you follow my work you will notice the same objects in my paintings. This painting is no different in that sense. The wine bottle, terracotta planter and decorative ceramic vase I’ve had for some years. They are “regulars” on my shelf of items to pull from for paintings. What’s new in this piece are the cloth and scarves that became part of the background and foreground decoration. The lemon and red pepper also show “new” and a context of time in the moment.
I rarely work with a vision of the finished work in my mind, for me the process is an unfoldment where I must trust what this painting experience has to show me. There is a continuity in my process which includes combining elements of the past with the present. Some of that emerges in the simplistic style that has a modern, expressive feeling with the energy of fresh color combinations.
The painting was created in my studio over the course of about a week. The blocks of color in the foreground emerged near the end and were unexpected. They were derived from a beautiful scarf that my friend brought over for inspiration. It’s a piece I was really drawn to. My hope for the painting is that it radiates a feeling of delight in the simplicity of ordinary things.
