Did you know that in many cultures, pears are a symbol of divine sustenance, abundance and longevity? I’m sure I’ve come across that information before but forget these tidbits of information. As a practice, I can enjoy looking up the symbolic meaning of things.
As far as pears go, the shape of this fruit is something that I find very sensual and beautiful to look at. They do remind me a bit of the female form with their voluptuous curves. In Greek and Roman times the pear was associated with femininity and wealth. What a coincidence!
I like painting pears and find myself usually working with Bosc pears as a subject but this spring I’ve been enjoying the Anjou Pear – both to eat and work with as subjects for a painting. I used them in a painting class I was teaching recently and they were wonderful objects to have my students explore. In this rendering I was working with a high key arrangement of secondary colors. This was inspired by the set-up I created for my students. They used a limited palette where as here I worked with a full palette of colors to create a more vividly expressive outcome.
I hope you enjoy it!

Beautiful Catherine. Love the colours!
Thanks so much Louise! I really like the colors too.
It looks especially striking against the white objects and background.
Thank you! I agree, the white really helps the whole painting pop.
