“Passage of Light”

“Passage of Light” 20″ x 16″ Oil on canvas – $1200

I always find delight in a simple bouquet of chrysanthemums, their hardy nature and ability to last is always a plus in my house! What appealed to me in this bouquet were the range of colors and deep magenta hues. It felt a like fall but with a palette that wasn’t the traditional orange and yellow.

To come up with the still life arrangement I looked through the archives of artwork I have from my daughter to see if I could find something different as a background. What I ended up incorporating was a large screen print from a project she did in college. The colors resonated with those in the bouquet and I liked the graphic element of the print and its architectural design. The vase is a utensil crock borrowed from my kitchen. I enhanced it with a horizontal ribbed pattern which gives it a little “homespun” feel.

As the colors started to go down on the canvas the play of light was so beautiful. Deepening the shadows and using jewel tone colors in contrast with the white and pale yellow really added a bit of dramatic intensity to the composition. The chartreuse green was a natural with the magenta.

This painting was created on a stretched canvas in oils and is a signed original. If you have any questions or wish to purchase this painting, contact me at cmartzloffart@gmail.com.
