I’ve been working on some larger still life paintings lately. That was one of my goals for this year. This is fun yet challenging. There’s a big difference between painting on a
9″ x 12″ canvas and on one that’s 24″ x 30″. My easel needs to change, the size of my palette needs to be bigger. The quantity of paint must expand and the list goes on. The entire experience just feels so different. Often the larger canvas rests in my studio, within view, as I wait for the inspiration and leading to begin.

In this piece, I was inspired by the summer, gardens, a sense of nostalgia and personal memories. I gathered some things I love and have saved for various reasons. I also pulled some printed fabrics onto the table to see how that might lead the arrangement. I never really know how the set up will transform as it unfolds and that’s part of the fun. It’s kind of like going a party where I don’t know anyone but the host and trusting I will having a great time.
