The Potter’s Mélange
This painting emerged from simple objects gathered around me for years. There is a terracotta-inspired jar with decorative banding. I have a copper ladle I picked up long ago in Maine. There are also patterned fabrics that seem to hum with color. As I arranged them together, the story began to unfold. The jar held its quiet weight, the ladle brought a glint of memory, and the fabrics carried movement and rhythm. I added a sheer drape behind the scene to soften the space. This allowed the folds of color to echo the shapes in front.
In the spirit of Table Top Stories, this work is less about any single object. It is more about the way they converse together. The conversation is earthy, warm, and familiar. Yet, it is vibrant when placed in relation to one another. Each element has its own history. On the table, they create a new narrative. Pottery, metal, and cloth share a moment of balance.
The Potter’s Mélange reflects what I love most about still life. Everyday pieces can transform into a tableau. This tableau feels both intimate and timeless. It’s a reminder that beauty often lies in the simple act of gathering. Beauty is also in noticing and honoring the objects that surround us.
