I’ve been continuing to make trips to the sunflower festival and capturing the changing landscape of sunflower fields. We’ve had quite a bit of rain lately which made the terrain a bit muddy and many of the blooms took on a more droopy state. It seems as though the duration of the sunflower is quite short. But the field plantings have been staggered so there continues to be plenty to enjoy.
This small painting was done on my first day there. It was a second plein-air piece for the day. I liked how some of the flowers were facing away from me while others were facing forward. I was experimental with my colors making some changes to my initial interpretation of the background tree line and tiny barn. Over all I aimed for a happy little painting that conveyed the sense of joy I felt just being there amongst such pastoral beauty.
Stay tuned for more! My collection of paintings is growing as the festival continues through October. There have been some beautiful vistas without sunflowers which will come shortly.
