A month or so ago I was working on a lot of still life oil paintings and lemons were a frequent part of my arrangements. In looking through my collection of recent works I came upon this piece which I really liked.
A smaller work of art done on an 8″x 8″ square canvas where I had fun celebrating the color YELLOW! I think that’s one of the attractions I find with the subject of lemons. I love the color! Although lemons are quite sour there is a brightness to them and in cooking lemon zest can add a measure of brightness and surprise as a flavor or texture. The symbolic meaning behind the color is linked to freshness, positivity, clarity and optimism. It reminds me of how I feel at the onset of spring and summer when days become longer and I get to enjoy the warmth of the sun.
The opposing color selections stay within the blue and violet range which to my eye are a nice compliment to the yellow. It reminds me that even in summer I need time in the shade because over exposure isn’t always a good thing.
I’m a person who likes the change of seasons they each have their assets and provide a context within which I can learn new things. These new experiences add to my pitcher giving it form and relevance within the whole.
