The wonder of a still life is something that never gets boring, although at times I find myself on a search to find new arrangements and subjects to incorporate.
This recent still life was inspired by the bowl which I found at a local thrift shop. I loved the patterning and shape of it as well as the aura of “craft” that it had. After getting the piece home I was drawn to the idea of incorporating the bowl into an upcoming still life painting.
Interpreting the bowl and fruit in the context of the surrounding area brought me to a place where the folds and shadows of the background fabric started to take on equal importance. While the bowl with it’s pattern stood out in contrast to the background with it’s warmer palette of colors the background space retained a strong presence. This wasn’t an entirely conscious effort on my end but something that emerged through my process.

Your still life is beautiful Catherine. There is a wonderful balance between the heaviness of the fabric to the bulky fruit and bowl, your choice of colors is perfect for the style. I love this painting – so glad I didn’t miss it.
You are so talented! I want a bowl like that…lol
