It was a cold winter day, not much snow yet so a friend invited a few fellow artists over to paint inside her home. To my surprise she had a model. Facing some internal trepidation with this knowledge I ventured on anyway. Coincidentally I had been thinking about getting back into practicing some figure work but didn’t know how that was going to happen.
My late arrival to the sitting guaranteed me this full frontal view. Insecurities arose with all the foreshortening I would need to navigate around or in.
There was a beautiful ambiance to the model and the space which I resonated with. Perhaps that’s what helped carry me though the more technical drawing challenges. I don’t know. But I just loved the warm hues in contrast with the jewel tone brights. There’s something magical in that for me.
The painting was done on a 9″ x 12″ canvas panel in oils. I did work on it a second day in my studio – fine tuning and developing a bit more detail.

This is lovely Catherine, I feel the warmth of the sun coming through. Very quiet and relaxing painting.
Thank you Mary! I appreciate hearing that.
