Patterns and Arrangements

Clementines and Things_1937
“Patterns and Arrangements” 16″ x 20″ oil on a canvas panel  $500

This painting was inspired by a bunch of Clementines available in my kitchen. I loved their shape and color.  I also liked the idea of pattern mixing. As it turned out I found a dress that my daughter had started making with this beautiful magenta floral pattern on it that seemed to work.  Lastly,  as everything was set and I examined the entire composition I noticed the postcard of Matisse’s painting sitting in the background.  Initially I planned on a close up view of the clementines, bowl and fabric but then decided to include the postcard and I think it’s turned out to be an important part of the composition. It certainly represents inspiration for me and the magic that can be found in the process of painting and following a dream.
